Senior Assistant Director for Employer Relations and Career Connections

Job Description

The Senior Assistant Director is a full-time (100%) 12-month appointment in The Career Center, a unit of Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Career Center provides all Illinois students collaborative and innovative programs, services, and resources focused on career and professional development that educates and empowers them to become thriving professionals in the global community. Learn more at The Senior Assistant Director leads the Employer Relations and Career Connections team which is responsible for on-campus recruiting services and resources for employers; experiential learning and internship programs; and job/internship preparation and search. This position develops partnerships with employers, alumni, and others that provide career opportunities and professional connections for students. As a member of The Career Center staff, this position responds to student needs, facilitates appropriate and timely service delivery (in person and virtual); conducts individual career coaching appointments; assesses learning and service outcomes; interprets assessment instruments; plans and presents programs and workshops; coordinates events and activities; utilizes career technologies; develops print and virtual resources; and has direct contact with students on a daily basis in a variety of settings.


Specific to this Position:

1. Lead Employer Relations and Career Connections Team and manage personnel and budgets of that functional area; oversee programs and services related to experiential learning and job/internship preparation and search 2. Serve as a member of The Career Center Leadership team to frame vision, establish goals, and execute strategies in support of our mission

3. Develop relationships with companies, non-profit organizations, and alumni to encourage and assist in developing internship/experiential education opportunities and professional connections for students

4. Guide the Center’s use of Handshake @ Illinois and lead campus-wide Handshake @ Illinois Users Committee 5. Manage The Career Center’s Interview Suite

6. Seek ways to engage professionals in the career and professional development of students

7. Coordinate with various career offices and campus partners to meet employers needs

8. Direct diversity initiatives, outreach and partnerships related to employer and professional connections

9. Supervise and perform timely performance evaluations for staff reporting to the position


Common to all Career Center Professionals:

1. Coach students one-on-one and in groups regarding career exploration and decision making, preparation for graduate/professional school, and employment/internship search

2. Engage diverse student populations and offices that serve underrepresented students

3. Assess services and programs to determine student learning outcomes, make evidence-based decisions, and facilitate continuous improvement

4. Serve as a liaison to designated departments and offices and maintain relationships with campus partners

5. Create and deliver presentations for variety of audiences, including students, families, campus partners, and external colleagues

6. Contribute to the design, creation, and maintenance print and online resources

7. Participate in professional development activities and associations

8. Serve on The Career Center, Student Affairs and/or campus committees, task forces, work groups, and advisory committees


Job Requirements 


Education Required: Master’s degree Preferred: Master’s degree in higher education administration/leadership, human resources, communication, counseling, or other related field


Skills & Experience Required:

1. 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in higher education, career coaching/counseling, and/or working with college students/recent college graduates

2. Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with diverse constituents

3. Proven leadership and supervisory experience

4. Experience serving diverse populations and knowledge of cultural differences

5. Experience leading, developing, and presenting student-focused workshops

6. Experience planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating programs and events

7. Excellent communication, customer service and public relations skills

8. Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

9. Experience with information technology, including use of online resources and presentation software

10. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple work priorities



1. Demonstrated understanding of the career and student development needs of college students

2. Demonstrated experience leading career development programs

3. Experience coordinating on-campus recruiting and employer/internship programs
