Director, Career Experiences

Job Description

Reporting to the assistant vice president of the Career Center, the director of Career Experiences leads the development, delivery and assessment of career experiences including on-campus jobs, job shadow programs and early engagement programs. The director provides strategic direction, leadership and goals for the student employment, employer engagement, early engagement and alumni career services/ASK teams, including oversight of the EDGE program. He/She leads efforts to build strategic internal partnerships, liaising closely with student affairs and student government to integrate career experiences throughout the student's co-curricular experience. He/She also provides oversight and guidance for building and managing relationships with external employers. The director is a key member of the Career Center leadership team working closely with the Director of Communication & Operations and the Director of Career Education to provide seamless career services and support to students, their families, alumni, faculty and staff.



•Work with the assistant vice president, Career Center to set goals that align with department, division, and university priorities. Monitor and report progress on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, adjusting tactics as necessary.

•S/he will lead a team to: ◦Plan and implement strategies, goals and tactics for engaging students in activities that provide them with career experiences. Through programming and partnerships externally and internally across the university, create opportunities for students to explore career options through on-campus and off-campus jobs, internships, shadowing, mentoring and networking.

◦Work with key stakeholders in Student Affairs and other internal departments to incorporate Career Center messages and services into existing programs, trainings and activities so that career experiences become an integral part of the student experience. Includes strategic integration and growth of the EDGE program.

◦Provide leadership for and execute a robust strategic plan for employer and community outreach and engagement with a focus on developing jobs, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities across a wide range of industries and fields. Monitor and report on related trends.

◦Provide oversight for on-campus student employment, ensuring compliance and process efficiency as well as career development potential.

•Perform other duties as assigned.


Managerial Responsibilities:

•(5) direct reports including associate director, Student Employment; associate director, EDGE & Early Engagement; associate director, Alumni Career Services/ASK; associate director, Employer Engagement (x2).

•Decisions regarding the overall strategic direction and policies and procedures of the Career Center will be referred to the AVP of the Career Center.


Job Requirements

Education & Experience:

•(7) or more years experience working in higher education, focused on developing career experiences and development programs and assessing learning.

•Experience building internal partnerships and external employer relationships.

•Experience supervising and mentoring professional staff and working cross-functionally.

•Experience managing projects utilizing both human and technical resources.

•Experience assessing program effectiveness.


Preferred Requirements:

Master's Degree


Other Skills and Abilities Required:

•Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use social media tools to engage students.

•Proficiency in MS Office.

•Familiarity with career management and mentoring systems, e.g. Handshake.

•Familiarity with career development models.
