DePauw University is a nationally recognized liberal arts university set on a beautiful campus of 695 acres in west central Indiana. This institution, which includes one of the nation's oldest schools of music, is dedicated to academically challenging and socially engaging students from across the country and around the globe. The Health Professions Advisor in the Kathryn F. Hubbard Center for Student Engagement contributes to the development and implementation of purposeful experiential learning opportunities in support of the mission and goals of the University in addition to the development of post-graduate opportunities. The Health Professions Advisor will offer a dedicated, highly personal approach to assisting and advising highly talented and motivated students and alumni in the many specific aspects of planning and preparation for a career in medical school, health sciences or a health-related field. The Health Professions Advisor will create a strategic agenda and policies for the health professions area that incorporates national best standards and positions DePauw students to succeed in getting into the best medical schools and health professions fields. The Advisor will cultivate a broad range of opportunities in all aspects of healthcare by developing new relationships and strengthening existing relationships with top graduate/professional schools and health-related industry organizations. The Advisor will provide students and alumni with access to relevant information, opportunities, and services and guide them in making responsible, informed decisions consistent with their interests and goals. The Advisor will develop and offer programming, and cultivate relationships with alumni and friends of the University to provide applied learning experiences, which help students gain a competitive advantage in the health related professions. The Advisor also will provide interested students and alumni with the resources and support necessary to develop an individual portfolio of knowledge, experiences, and competencies required for advanced study or careers in health and medicine. With appropriate qualifications, the Advisor will have opportunities for limited teaching in lab classes. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Create a strategic agenda and policies for the health professions area that incorporates national best standards and positions DePauw students to succeed in getting into the best medical schools and health professions areas. ADVISING • Advise students through multiple media about advanced study and careers in the health professions (including, but not limited to medical, dentistry, nursing, physician assistant, physical therapy, chiropractic, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, public health, and sports medicine); • Counsel students in selecting potential career options, developing strategies to explore those options, and identifying resources useful in successfully implementing the job search or application process; • Guide students and alumni through the graduate/professional school application processes, including application materials, entrance examinations, personal statements and interviews, as well as providing general guidance on professional school financing; • Guide students through the application processes, including writing letters of recommendation for applying to summer academic programs or internships; • Advise students on post-baccalaureate programs for health professions ( i.e. pre-med); • Advise and promote the efforts of student pre-health organizations, including the Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity; PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT • Explore emerging opportunities and professions arising from a changing healthcare industry that may attract students, including those from disciplines other than the sciences who wish to explore non-clinical healthcare careers, such as healthcare administration, management, or health education; • Collaborate with the Office of Alumni Engagement to cultivate a network of alumni to serve as mentors, speakers, internship hosts, etc., and to strengthen DePauw's reputation for the health careers program among alumni; • Develop and promote field-based learning opportunities, which will make students better informed and more competitive candidates to enter the health professions; and • Ensure that undergraduates and young alumni are prepared for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or other entrance exams (DAT, VAT, GRE, etc.), and that DePauw's curriculum appropriately adapts to those exams as they evolve. OUTREACH • Collaborate with departments, faculty advisors, staff, and various administrators on campus to help them understand unique academic requirements students interested in medical and allied healthcare careers face, in addition to distribution and major requirements; • Collaborate with academic and professional advising staff, faculty members, student life staff, and other University offices to develop a strong pre-med and allied health program and reputation; • Form connections with mid and top-tier medical and health-professional schools to form strong working relationships; • Coordinate with the Admission Office to help recruit new students with an interest in preparing for health careers through a liberal arts education; • Develop and oversee the content of handouts and marketing materials related to health professions; and • Coordinate and chair the Health Sciences Advisory Committee. GENERAL DUTIES • Collect and maintain data pertaining to the admission of students and alumni to health professional schools. • Be active in the National Association of Advisors to the Health Professions (NAAHP) and monitor applications through the advisor portals established by the central application services. • Other duties as assigned as related to the operations of the Hubbard Center for Student Engagement, career development and success in the health professions area.


Job Requirements:

SKILLS & ABILITIES Education and Experience: Bachelors required. Master's preferred in a health science or health-related field preferred. Ideally 3 to 5 years work-related experience advising and mentoring college students interested in health professions. An understanding of field-based learning and the world of work, especially as it affects those with a liberal arts background, is essential. Must demonstrate the ability to establish a vision, goals and metrics for success; to identify the needs of multiple stakeholders; to design programs, services, and initiatives that meet those needs; to build coalitions; to create dynamic programs and new initiatives; attention to detail and administrative work flows; comfortable use of technology to communicate effectively (both written and presentations); meet individually with students to compile, analyze, and present data; to favor a collaborative approach; and facilitate connection. Must be committed to diversity (i.e., first-generation students, students of color, international students, LGBTQ, and students with a disability). With appropriate qualifications, the candidate may have opportunities for limited teaching in appropriate field of study.
