Academic Advisor/ Career Counselor

Job Description:

The University of Michigan, School of Kinesiology is searching for an Academic Advisor/Career Counselor to provide academic advising/career counseling to prospective, new, and current students in Kinesiology. Responsibilities* Provide academic advising and assist students with career exploration and planning, including field experience/internships, job opportunities and graduate/professional school preparation. Advise students on strategies that promote academic and professional success. Counsel students experiencing academic difficulties, including those with transitional, and health issues. Refer students to support services including financial aid, tutorial support, psychological, and testing services. Develop, implement, coordinate and assess initiatives, events, and activities dedicated to student academic success including creating career services workshops and internship/employment opportunities for students. Maintain career alumni/student network and employment sites. Establish, nurture and sustain positive and collegial relationships with academic departments and faculty. Serve as liaison to assigned academic departments, student services, administrative units, alumni, and employers. Hire, train and supervise work study students. Advise a Kinesiology student organization. Participate and serve on university committees.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree and some experience in counseling and/or Higher Education administration is necessary.

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, speaking and writing skills, including the ability to make effective presentations to prospective and current students
  • Ability to handle confidential issues appropriately; demonstrated good judgment
