Assistant Director/Coordinator

Job Description:

This newly created position in the Career Advancement Center is a full-time position reporting to the Associate Vice President for Career & Professional Development. Responsibilities include: 

  • Design and implement innovative initiatives in collaboration with key academic and co-curricular departments (such as Gates Center for Leadership & Personal Growth, Intercultural Relations, and academic support services) to assist all students with career planning/exploration efforts

  • Counsel and advise students/alumni individually and in group settings on topics such as: exploring majors/career interests, understanding intersection of culture and career, interpreting results of assessments (such as MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory), developing a professional presence, writing professional documents, and obtaining jobs/internships/admittance to graduate school

  • Provide specialized support for students interested in science and technical fields; serve on the Health Professions Advisory Committee

  • Guide graduate/professional school programming and test preparation initiatives in collaboration with Graduate/Professional School Committee members; manage relationships with key graduate schools and develop a strong understanding for admissions procedures • Develop assessment measures to evaluate program successes and opportunities

  • Contribute to community education efforts to help parents, alumni and community members to understand current best practices in career development and to be strong supporters for students

  • Serve on campus committees and represent the Career Advancement Center at college events

  • Complete other duties as assigned, including working with alumni and employers

Job Requirements:

  • Graduate or professional school degree is required

  • Must have an interest and ability in working with science/technical fields

  • Background in career services, counseling, social work or related field is a plus, preferably in a college environment

  • Must be team oriented with strong interpersonal skills and ability to think creatively

  • Attentive to details; must possess strong writing and editing capability; ability to use technology required for the role, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

  • Ability to design, execute, and evaluate career development interventions

  • Qualification for the administration and interpretation of assessment instruments preferred (e.g. Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator)

  • Experience working with international students and traditionally under-represented groups is preferred

  • Available to work some evenings and weekends
