Assistant Director - Campus Recruiting & Job/Internship Preparation

Job Description:

The Assistant Director is a full-time (100%) 12-month appointment in The Career Center, a unit of Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Founded in 1867, the Illinois campus is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions. It is one of the top comprehensive research public universities in the nation. The successful candidate will be working on a campus with academically talented and diverse student population, including 19 percent international students, 12 percent Asian American students, 5 percent African American students, and 6 percent Hispanic/Latino students from a total enrollment of over 42,000 students. It is a traditional residential campus with nearly 10,500 students living in campus housing. The Assistant Director provides leadership for campus recruiting events/services and job/internship preparation services and resources, and is a member of the Career Connections team which empowers and enables students to actively plan their futures. The position specifically works with employers, manages on campus recruiting, leads the mock interview program, and provides services and resources related to students’ preparation and search for job/internship positions. The position responds to student needs, facilitates appropriate and timely services in multiple delivery modes, and coordinates services/resources for students, campus partners, and professional staff related to career development. The Assistant Director contributes to the vision and strategic planning of The Career Center, serves as a team member for the Career Connections team, conducts individual career and pre-professional counseling, assesses learning and service outcomes, interprets assessment instruments/admission tests, plans and presents programs and workshops, coordinates events and activities, utilizes career technologies, communicates electronically, develops print and virtual resources, and has direct contact with students on a daily basis in a variety of settings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Common to all Career Center Professionals

1. Counsel students one-on-one and in groups regarding career and pre-professional (health professions and graduate school) planning, academic choices, employment/internship search, and graduate or professional school admission/opportunities

2. Outreach to diverse student populations and multi-cultural constituencies

3. Assess services/ programs to determine student needs/learning outcomes and facilitate continuous improvement

4. Serve as a liaison to designated departments and offices

5. Prepare and deliver presentations for various campus audiences

6. Utilize virtual technologies and resources (i.e. web sites, on-line surveys, blogs, podcasts, etc) in the delivery of service to students

7. Administer and interpret career assessments and pre-professional admission results with students

8. Develop and update career and pre-professional development (e.g. health professions, graduate school, career counseling) information (print/web/virtual, etc.)

9. Participate in professional development activities and associations

10. Serve on The Career Center, Student Affairs and/or campus committees, task forces, work groups, and advisory committees, and participate in staff development activities.

11. Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Assistant Director, Leadership team, or Associate Director

Specific to this Position

1. Serve as a member of the Career Connections team

2. Assist with diversity initiatives, outreach and partnerships related to career and professional connections

3. Manage on-campus recruiting services and programs, job/internship postings, employer use of the career management software program (I-Link)

4. Cultivate relationships and maintain contact with employers who have expressed an interest in Illinois students

5. Supervise, coordinate and administer the Mock Interview Program (employment, health, graduate, professional school)

6. Organize programs and events for employers/alumni to present to and connect with students in coordination with the Campus Outreach team

7. Connect students with alumni through mentor/job shadow programs

8. Administer the All-Campus Career Fair and other campus recruiting events

9. Supervise and perform timely performance evaluations for undergraduate or graduate student(s) depending on needs

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree required by start date. Preferred in counseling related field, educational administration/leadership, human resources, communication, or similar. 1-3 years of relevant professional/graduate assistant/practicum experience required by start date. Preferred in career advising/counseling (one-to-one and in groups), outreach to campus constituents/partners, employer/internship programs, and experiences related to career and student development needs of college students.


  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience developing, administering and presenting career programs, seminars and workshops
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to relate effectively with a diverse student population
  • Ability to plan, implement, manage, and evaluate programs/events and projects as well as handle multiple work priorities
  • Possess excellent customer service and public relations skills, and an ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Effective collaboration and communication with students, faculty, administrators and external constituents
  • Experience with information technology including use of the Internet as an advising tool, and familiarity with various word-processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation programs is highly desirable
