Internship Director

Job Description:

Basic Function: Coordinates outreach to employers from career fields underrepresented in traditional on-campus recruiting programs—creative arts, design, media, non-profit and community-focused organizations, start-up businesses, and others—in order to generate internship and experiential learning opportunities. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) serves as the lead college supporting the expansion of internship opportunities in non-traditional recruiting fields. The Internship Developer works closely with faculty, the Field Career Consultant, advisors and other administrators in CAL to:

  • Develop and implement strategies to establish and expand relationships with career fields/industries and specific employers offering internships, practica, job shadowing, or other career-related experiential learning opportunities for students
  • Develop and implement strategies to build relationships with key faculty and staff who act as “career agents” for non-traditional recruiting field students 
  • Act as a broker to cultivate relationships between employers and targeted college faculty and staff
  • Identify employers in key interest areas, especially in the mid-Michigan area, and follow up on employer leads
  • Work with employers to help create quality internship opportunities and help them connect with appropriate MSU career services resources
  • Work effectively with diverse groups of students and employers
  • Promote to external constituents the skill sets and capabilities of MSU students seeking opportunities in non-traditional recruiting fields
  • Communicate about external employers and opportunities:
    • Research potential employers and share timely information and generate useful reports for stakeholders in CAL and the Career Services Network
  • Create and coordinate career events related to internships and/or non-traditional recruiting fields
  • Fulfill other Career Services Network projects and duties as assigned Communication/Interpersonal Relationships:
    • The Internship Developer interacts with a diverse group:
      • Faculty, Administrators, Career Practitioners, Support Staff – in order to coordinate and promote internship opportunities, answer questions, and exchange information
      • Employers – in order to develop new internship-related contacts and maintain existing relationships
      • Students – in order to advise and assist in internship search processes
      • Local, State and Federal Agencies/Other Colleges and Universities/Professional Recruiters – in order to gather information, address issues, and discuss experiential learning opportunities.

Job Requirements:

Education/Experience: The job requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in liberal arts, humanities, social science, communication, media, or an arts-related field; three to five years of experience working in an education, non-profit, communications, media or arts-related related job; progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in business, marketing, human resources, or coordinating career programs; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Masters degree is preferred. The Internship Developer reports to the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters responsible for undergraduate education, and to the Associate Director of Career Services responsible for employer relations.
