Senior Assistant Director for Career Counseling and Campus Outreach

Job Description:

The Senior Assistant Director is a full-time (100%) 12-month appointment in The Career Center, a unit of Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Senior Assistant Director provides leadership for career counseling and campus outreach as part of the Career and Pre-Professional Development team and contributes to the vision and strategic planning of The Career Center. This position serves as a team leader for counselor training, campus outreach, and staff development including coordination of career development services and resources for students, campus partners, and outside constituencies.

As a member of The Career Center staff, this position responds to student needs, facilitates appropriate and timely service delivery (in person and virtual); conducts individual career counseling appointments; assesses learning and service outcomes; interprets assessment instruments; plans and presents programs and workshops; coordinates events and activities; utilizes career technologies; develops print and virtual resources; and has direct contact with students on a daily basis in a variety of settings.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Common to all Career Center Professionals

1. Counsel students one-on-one and in groups regarding career exploration and decision making, employment/internship search, and graduate or professional school admission/opportunities
2. Outreach to diverse student populations and multi-cultural constituencies
3. Assess services and programs to determine student learning outcomes and facilitate continuous improvement
4. Serve as a liaison to designated departments and offices
5. Prepare and deliver presentations for various campus audiences
6. Utilize virtual technologies and resources in the delivery of service to students
7. Administer and interpret career assessments and discuss admissions test results with students
8. Develop and update career and pre-professional development (e.g. health professions, graduate school, career counseling) information (print/web/virtual, etc.)
9. Participate in professional development activities and associations
10. Serve on The Career Center, Student Affairs and/or campus committees, task forces, work groups, and advisory committees, and participate in staff development activities.
11. Perform other duties as assigned by the Leadership team, Associate Director, or Director

Specific to this Position
1. Lead and coordinate the Campus Outreach team and manage personnel and budgets of the functional area
2. Serve as a member of The Career Center leadership team to frame vision, goals, and coordinated services for The Career Center
3. Assist in managing the fluid delivery of career and pre-professional counseling and services (physically and virtually) that effectively uses Center resources, staff, and paraprofessionals
4. Develop and maintain strategic campus partnerships, coordinate campus outreach related to career development, and serve as primary contact for campus professionals regarding career development and outreach initiatives

5. Manage outreach to student organizations, student events, academic departments/courses, and Student Affairs units
6. Direct diversity initiatives involving career and professional development to meet the needs of underrepresented students at the University
7. Serve as a resource and Center’s contact for EPSY 220 instructors
8. Coordinate in-house professional development for The Career Center staff
9. Manage the Career Drop-in Advising (CDA) program and training for graduate and undergraduate paraprofessionals
10. Manage and maintain EPICS Program
11. Supervise and perform timely performance evaluations for staff reporting to position

 

Job Requirements:

Required Education: Master’s degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education administration or other related field.
Preferred Education: Master’s or doctorate degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, or counselor education

Required Experience:
• 3-5 years of full-time, professional work experience
• Experience counseling and/or advising college students
• Proven leadership and supervision of staff
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Experience leading, developing, administering and presenting career programs, seminars and workshops
• Sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to relate effectively with a diverse student population
• Ability to plan, implement, manage, and evaluate programs/events and projects as well as handle multiple work priorities
• Excellent customer service and public relations skills, and a proven ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Effective collaboration and communication with students, faculty, administrators and external constituents
• Experience with information technology including use of online resources, MS Excel, and presentation software

Preferred Experience:
• Experience training professional and/or paraprofessional staff
• Demonstrated knowledge of career development theory and practice
• Proven ability to develop strategic campus partnerships and collaborations
