Job Description:

The Director of Career Services is responsible for assisting Media students with all aspects of the job search process. The College of Media comprises four majors: Advertising, Agricultural Communications, Journalism, and Media & Cinema Studies. It enrolls, approximately 1,100 undergraduate students. The Director is responsible for individual and group career counseling, develops and presents programs and workshops, and coordinates events and activities. The Director will assist Media students to position themselves as premier candidates for media-oriented industries and other relevant careers. The Director will work with and assist College of Media Faculty/Staff in developing, planning, coordinating and implementing existing and future college-wide and department-specific careers and assist with logistics related to initiatives and programs developed by college/departments related to career services. The Director will be responsible for the development of informational tactics that will aid employees in recruiting Media students. The Director will collaborate with internal and external career specialists and professionals to establish, enhance, and expand internship and job opportunities relevant to Media professionals and engage in ongoing activities that cultivate an understanding of media industry participants - and the skills necessary for a student to succeed in the industry as a professional. The Director will collaborate with faculty and staff with planning educational immersion and professional development activities in various media markets. The Director will be expected to implement, manage, and facilitate all aspects of career search software programs (Symplicity or similar career technologies). The Director will be expected to create, develop and maintain databases including: all past and current internships available to students, student internships accepted and held each semester, entry level jobs offered and accepted yearly, intern and job postings within College of Media, internship for credit/internships not for credit, alumni network, recruiter network, and assist alumni relations in keeping track of where graduates get jobs. The Director will provide cross-departmental leadership for the career preparation and placement services and support for all Media students.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic and flexible individual well able to adjust to both student and industry needs, and develop the appropriate timely services and resources for Media students. This is a full-time, 12-month academic professional position. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Start date is January 16, 2013 or as soon as possible after the closing date.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree. Preferred in media, counseling related field, educational administration/leadership, human resources, communication, or similar. Three years of relevant professional work experience in a media related field or work experience including advising/counseling experience related to career and student development or corporate recruitment. Knowledge of career service software. Development and maintenance of databases and tracking of job placements. Program assessment. Ability to work independently.

Qualifications: Preferred: Master’s degree. Preferred in media, counseling related field, educational administration/leadership, human resources, communication, or similar. An understanding of the needs and concerns of college students and a passion for working with them. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated experience in effective collaboration and communication with students, faculty, administrators and external constituents. Possess excellent customer service and public relations skills, and a proven ability to work effectively in a team environment. Sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to relate effectively with a diverse student population.
