Job Description

The Career Development Specialist supports learning by providing Aurora University students with opportunities to develop the skills necessary to be successful in their chosen careers. The Career Development Specialist serves as both a specialist and a generalist in the field of career development/Career Services. The Career Development Specialist will work within Aurora University’s fields of study to promote career development opportunities for students studying in those fields. This will include internship development, faculty and advisor consultation, employer development, and direct support (e.g. resume review, cover letter writing, interviewing strategies, possible career paths related to specific majors, labor market and graduate school information, etc.) to students and alumni.

Essential Job Functions: Provide direct support to students and alumni on resume development, cover letter writing, interviewing strategies, internship and job search assistance, and career exploration through individual appointments or small group meetings. Promote career development opportunities for students based on academic/professional fields, including internship development, faculty and advisor consultation, and direct support to students and alumni. Oversee, in conjunction with respective academic departments, the academic internship process, which includes assisting students in their internship searches, working with faculty and Executive Directors/Deans to facilitate the completion of the internship application, coordinating with internship site supervisors as needed, and administering surveys to host employers. Develop and lead classroom presentations and workshops on topics such as resume writing, interviewing, professional branding/LinkedIn, job search strategies, and career assessments, responding to outreach requests from the campus community. Administer and interpret career-related assessments, such as Focus2. Assist with initiating and maintaining recruiting relationships with employers for job and internship opportunities. Prepare and update “What Can I Do With A Major In…” sheets, along with additional informational documents, for the website and office use. Coordinate the administrative processes for all on-campus student workers, including processing all hiring, new employee, and dismissal paperwork for on-campus student workers. Plan and coordinate special events relating to on- and off-campus student employment (i.e. National Student Employment Week). Actively participate in the Illinois Small College Placement Association (ISCPA) including CareerFest and Fall Interview Day.

 



Job Requirements 

Education: Bachelors required. Masters in Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology, or related field preferred.

 

Experience: Minimum two years’ experience in Career Services in a higher education environment or relatively similar environment required.

 

Skills: Commitment to student career development and sensitivity to diverse populations. Ability to motivate and assist students in developing long-term goals and coordinate this effort with faculty, staff, alumni and employers. Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, and willingness to take initiative.

 

Physical Requirements: Ability to move about campus and other locations. Ability to interact verbally, via electronic media and by telephone.
