Job Description:

The UIS Career Development Center is accepting applications for the position of Career Counselor. Under general supervision of the Assistant Director for the Career Development Center, the Career Counselor provides a full range of career development services to students, alumni, and prospective students. Requirements include a Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related area of study and two years of experience in career/mental health counseling with the ability to assist students/alumni in the development of realistic career goals and job search strategies. Duties: • Serves as professional career counselor to individuals and groups providing mental health, career, and academic counseling to students and alumni using face-to-face and distance counseling methods. • Serves as primary student resource for general questions about Career Center services and offerings. Acts as liaison and general resource to faculty and academic advisors by offering services to better accommodate students with career development needs as it relates to their department and/or course. • Assists in planning and executing numerous campus-wide career development seminars and workshops, and classroom presentations to educate students, constituents, staff and faculty about the career planning process. • Continuously, benchmarks and assesses counseling and advising services in accordance with NACE, NCDA, and CAS standards. • Initiates and implements strategies designed to increase the number of students using departmental services; works cooperatively with other staff to coordinate referrals for all Career Center service offerings. • Researches, develops and contributes written reports detailing student outcomes, usage of services, client satisfaction results etc. for departmental reporting purpose; provides recommendations for improvement. • Aids in planning and supervising the activities of practicum students, interns, and paraprofessionals. • Other projects/duties as assigned by the Director. 


Job Requirements:

 

Required Qualifications: • Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related area of study. • Two years of experience in career/mental health counseling with the ability to assist students/alumni in the development of realistic career goals and job search strategies. • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. • Strong verbal and written communication skills firmly rooted in ability to relate to the diversity of constituents. • Experience in individual and group career counseling techniques with knowledge in distance counseling. • In-depth knowledge of counseling and career development theories and techniques with a complete understanding of the interrelationship between mental health and career development concerns. • Ability to assess career barriers, career maturity and decision making skills. • Knowledge in alternative approaches to career development and planning needs for individuals with disabilities, minorities, older job-seekers, and first generation students, etc. • Knowledge of current employment trends and career planning materials. Preferred Qualifications: • Successful completion of the Licensed Professional Counselor designation (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) designation, National Certified Counselor (NCC) designation, and/or Distance Credentialed Counselor designation. • Career services experience in higher education. • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in career development technical guidance systems such as Focus, Nacelink, Optimal Resume, Going Global; Experience in distance counseling practices as established by the Center for Credentialing and Education.
